Back pain is one of the leading causes of sick leave in almost every country in the world, second only to the common cold. It is also one of the biggest complaints that chiropractors, doctors, and other wellness experts hear.Santa Barbara Chiropractor James Neary

What Causes Back Pain?

The back is a complex system of  nerves, bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons, any one of which can be a source of pain. The most common cause of back pain is muscle strain. The back muscles can usually heal themselves within a couple of weeks, but the pain can be intense and debilitating. Other common sources of back pain include disc problems, such as degenerative disc disease or a lumbar disc herniation,  scoliosis, and osteoarthritis.

What can we do to help?

As a Doctor of Chiropractic, it is my duty to help relieve and/or end back pain in a holistic manner. Below, I have compiled a collection of tips to help you alleviate or prevent back pain and get you back on the path to wellness.

1. Stretch before doing anything strenuous. Shortened muscles can cause misalignment in the spine and cause back pain. Stretching lengthens shortened muscles and can help relieve back pain. Tightened muscles, including lower body muscles, can affect the alignment of the spine. Stretching and exercising will increase movement and mobility in the spine.

2. Adjust your posture. Posture is very important to spinal health. Read my article about posture here.

3. Try to maintain an ideal weight and eat healthy. The American Obesity Association states 64.5% of adult Americans are categorized as being overweight or obese. The spine is designed to carry the body’s weight and distribute the loads encountered during rest and activity. With extra weight, the spine is forced to absorb the burden, which may lead to injuries and other ailments such as sciatica.

I hope these tips are enough to get you started on a holistic approach to back pain. If you need more assistance, contact us so we can setup an appointment to see how chiropractic care can help you.
